New York Sells out of iPhone

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Residents of the Big Apple (no pun intended) looking to purchase an iPhone from an Apple store where out of luck earlier today when, according to the Huffington Post, New York’s Apple stores reported being sold out of iPhones. All three Apple stores; SoHo, 59th Street, and West 14th Street, all confirmed being completely out of stock of the device.

As of earlier today, there was not yet any word on when they would be getting their next shipment, but those who don’t want to wait can still get one. As a representative form the 59th Street location said, “You can always go online.”

iPhones are available online from Apple.com, AT&T.com well as AT&T stores stores in the area.

iPhone News (SDK, 3G…)

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

So there has been a few things happening over the past few days, so here is a full round up:

Steve Jobs has been talking about the iPhone at the Apple Shareholders Meeting Yesterday.

Apple held a shareholder conference earlier this Tueday, at which Steve Jobs talked about several of the things about the iPhone that have been on people’s minds, like the Software Development Kit, Flash for the iPhone, and more.

As far as the SDK goes, Steve said that “You’ll see a lot of apps out there this summer”, referring to native applications created based on the Software Developers Kit Apple has been promising. This could be interpreted to mean either that the SDK will be out soon and it will take developers a long time to write the apps, or that they won’t have the SDK out until then. He also said that the SDK would help open the market for native gaming opportunities on the iPhone.

Another interesting moment was when he was asked a question about a native blogging application on the iPhone. In addressing it, he suggested that “if Apple does not address it,” that the person who asked should learn Cocoa and write the iPhone blogger application himself.

He also said that Adobe Flash won’t be coming to the iPhone anytime soon, but his reasoning for it isn’t what you might expect. Steve said that Flash Lite, Adobe’s current version of Flash for mobile devices, isn’t up to par with Apple’s expectations for a full internet experience. The full version of flash that runs on your desktop computers is closer, but it’s intended for large machines and would perform poorly on the iPhone. From personal experience, I’ve noticed my CPU usage on the MacBook Pro flare up when I visit particularly Flash-rich sites.

Which might go some way to explain why Flash is not on the iPhone. Interesting to see that he says that will be alot of apps out there this summer - interesting. Also, there have been reports of the usual 3G kind.

A spokesman from Taiwanese electronic company, Citigroup, stated that their sources confirmed a 3G iPhone will be released 2nd quarter of 2008. Steve Jobs reportedly stated that the 3G chips draw to much power, though the statement was critiqued by many analysts and Steve Wozniak. AT&T has announced that they are expand their 3G network, and it should be in nearly 350 US markets by the end of this year. A 3G chip has long be rumored, though past comments by Steve Jobs and aT&T spokesm an have hinted towards an 08 release.

Also of note, today Apple held their shareholder meeting. Steve confirmed they are on track to sell their predicted 10 million iPhones this year, and added he hopes to provide service in China and India. Steve added his disappointment that iTunes was unable to have 1000 movies available for download, blaming the movie studios for the delay.

Apple are also advertsing for a developer to work on the iPhone Camera with Apps and stuff:

Apple recently posted a new job opening on their website for the position of iPhone Photo and Camera Apps Developer. The description says that the position would involve “taking the iPhone Camera and Photos experience to the next level.”

The job requirements include experience with the necessary operating system skills and experience with manipulating images and camera metadata like EXIF tags.

Currently the iPhone’s photo-taking capabilities are fairly basic, taking photos for contacts or of quick events. This job opening might be a sign that Apple is looking to expand it’s functionality, if not with new hardware, than at least on the software level.

So sounds like more exciting stuff could come with the Camera - maybe video, send to YouTube etc, all the things we have all been saying we wanted for a long time now.

Also, this might interest a few of you:

Good news, everyone! We reported a while ago that someone had created a native MMS application for the iPhone that would allow iPhone owners to send MMS messages to other people, but it still couldn’t receive MMS messages. Thankfully that has changed. The SwirlyMMS has been updated to enable iPhone users to both send and receive MMS.

In order for the app to work correctly, you’ll need to make sure that you have your settings configured correctly for your region and carrier. You can get instructions on how to do that here.

Also, it hasn’t been mentioned, but we think you might need to add MMS to your iPhone plan for this to work correctly.

You can find SwirlyMMS in the Installer.app under the “network” cata

Starbuck US moving from T-Mobile to AT&T

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Starbucks announced that they are partnering with AT&T to supply Wifi access to Starbuck’s 7000 stores nationwide. Starbucks had previously partnered with T-Mobile to provide pay-Wifi access in their stores. AT&T’s new service offers free access to specific customers:
Beginning this spring, Starbucks Card holders can enjoy up to two hours of free Wi-Fi service per day at Starbucks locations offering Wi-Fi access, while more than 12 million qualifying AT&T broadband and AT&T U-verseSM Internet customers will have unlimited free access to the Wi-Fi service. In addition, more than 5 million of AT&T’s remote access services business customers will be able to access Wi-Fi service at Starbucks locations. AT&T will soon extend the benefits of Wi-Fi at Starbucks to its wireless customers.

Outside of these situations, AT&T’s Wifi service costs $3.99 for a two-hour session, or $19.99 for monthly access. Existing T-Mobile HotSpot customers should be unaffected. T-Mobile customers will continue to get free Wifi access at Starbucks due to an agreement between AT&T and T-Mobile.

Of interest, AT&T states that it “will soon extend the benefits of Wi-Fi at Starbucks to its wireless customers”, suggesting that iPhone users will also get Wifi access in the future. AT&T currently provides exclusive wireless service for the Apple iPhone.

AT&T Subscriptions Reach Record

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

AT&T said Thursday that fourth-quarter earnings rose over 61 percent, helped largely by its acquisition of BellSouth and the addition of a record 2.7 million wireless customers, many of which are believed to have switched to the provider as a result of Apple’s iPhone.

For the three-month period ending December, AT&T said net profit rose 61.8 percent to $3.14 billion, or $0.51 a share, up from $1.94 billion, or $0.50 a share during the same period one year ago.

Sales were up some 91 percent to $30.35 billion from $15.9 billion during the year-ago quarter, boosted largely by the provider’s December 2006 acquisition of BellSouth.

During the quarter, AT&T said it added 2.7 million new wireless customers to end at a nation’s best 70.1 million mobile subscribers. The surge, thanks largely to Apple’s iPhone, helped boost wireless revenues by 16.3 percent to $11.4 billion.

Apple said earlier this week that it sold over 2.3 million iPhones during the same three-month period. The net additions to AT&T’s mobile subscriber base are believed to have come largely at the expense of Sprint/Nextel, which warned last week that it had incurred a considerable loss of high-value customers during the December quarter.

AT&T’s ability to maintain strength in its wireless business came as some reassurance to investors, after the company said earlier this month that had been forced to disconnect a number of landline subscribers who were finding it difficult to pay more than one telephone bill.

Still, fears of a growing economic downturn continued to weigh on shares of the telecommunications giant, which were trading down $0.93, or 2.5 percent, to $35.76 in early afternoon trading.

AT&T to Deliver free WiFi at over 10,000 US AT&T Hotspots

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

AT&T Inc today announced that more than 10 million AT&T broadband subscribers will soon have free unlimited access to the company’s nationwide Wi-Fi network, the largest Wi-Fi network in the United States. The offer delivers an annual saving of $60 for AT&T broadband customers, and an annual saving of nearly $240 compared with AT&T Wi-Fi costs for consumers who do not have an AT&T broadband plan.

The enhancement plays directly into the company’s efforts to increase the value of broadband by adding more ways for consumers to stay connected to their worlds. The move also reflects the growing popularity of wireless-enabled devices — from the iPhone to PDAs — as reports claim that more than one-third of Internet users have logged on using a wireless connection from home, at work or someplace else — showing an increase in on-the-go connections1.

“Consumers today expect and demand a premier broadband experience — including a consistent, reliable connection no matter where they are,” said Rick Welday, chief marketing officer, AT&T Consumer, in the press release. “And that’s exactly what we’re focused on. Our priority is to keep our customers connected. Period. Extending our Wi-Fi network supports this effort — and doing so for free combines even greater value with greater connectivity.”

The free Wi-Fi offer will be available to new and existing customers who subscribe to any of AT&T’s broadband services with downstream speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps, 3.0 Mbps, or 6.0 Mbps. Free Wi-Fi access was initially provided to the company’s higher-speed broadband customers last year.

AT&T wireless customers who use Apple Inc.’s iPhone will now be able use their iPhones at hotspots for free if they are AT&T broadband Internet subscribers.

AT&T offers wireless Internet connectivity at more than 10,000 U.S. locations, including retail stores, restaurants and airports from coast to coast.

“AT&T’s legacy is one that has led the way in giving our customers more features and better value — a legacy we intend to keep,” said Welday. “This year, we plan to stand by this commitment by leveraging, and investing, in our network capabilities to bring new enhancements to our broadband service.”

Broadband customers will soon benefit from the free Wi-Fi offer, with qualified broadband plans, upon signing up for AT&T broadband service at a company retail store, online at Att.com or through an AT&T call center. Wi-Fi connectivity will be activated once customers receive their new broadband service and complete both the setup and the registration process as a new customer. A comprehensive list of AT&T Wi-Fi locations can be found here.

AT&T is the largest provider of broadband service, with 13.8 million broadband lines in service as of the third quarter of 2007.

Firmware 1.1.3 to include Copy & Paste

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

MacScoop is reporting that the upcoming Firmware 1.1.3 for the iPhone will be unveiled at MacWorld and that the version that has been leaked may not be the final version, with some features possibly still hidden.

Apple will release an iPhone software update during MacWorld Expo 2008, well informed sources confirmed MacScoop. But it appears that the unpolished iPhone sofware version recently leaked on the Internet doesn’t include all the features of the final release.

The reports we obtained claim that the software update will add copy-paste, which is one of the most requested features by iPhone users, and will provide a few other user interface improvements. Additionally, the update should provide better stability and performance for the device which sometimes suffers from UI glitches and application hangs in its current version.

Sources also confirmed recent reports claiming that a soon to be released iPhone software update will offer very improved Google Maps with localization and hybrid view, mass SMS sending and multi-page editable home screen. It is not out of question that other, non revealed yet features, appear with this update, our sources said.

Firmware 1.1.3 - The Video “Sequel”

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Well its looking more likely that the 1.1.3 firmware sneak preview that GearLive have shown us could be the real thing. They have posted an 8-minute video of all the features including the “wiggle” of the icons (also noted is that if you want to delete any bookmarks, a small round circle appears at the top left corner of the icon - this only appears on the bookmarks and not on the installed applications already on the iPhone!), Multiple SMS texting, adding a bookmark to the home screen & creating a new home screen and the google maps triangulation GPS feature.

2 iPhone Revisions in 2008

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

AppleInsider is quoting that researches from Goldman Sachs are saying that they believe that Apple will release 2 revisions to the iPhone in 2008 - one minor, one major (as well as a revamped Apple TV!)

After meeting with key component suppliers and manufacturers in Asia, researchers for investment bank Goldman Sachs said this week they believe Apple will introduce two revisions to the iPhone in 2008 — one minor, one major — in addition to an Apple TV overhaul during the second half of the year.

a note to clients on Tuesday, analyst David Bailey advised clients that his Far Eastern contacts have lead him to believe that “Apple has several important new products lined up for 2008,” though none of them are expected to pack the same punch as the company’s inaugural iPhone handset.

Among them is a second-generation iPhone currently in the “final design phase,” the analyst said. The handset is expected to “have a similar form factor as the current version although it could have a different look and will probably include 3G capability.”

Bailey estimates that the next-gen iPhone will launch sometime during the second half of the year, but also believes the company will tie over consumers with “a smaller upgrade with more flash memory earlier in the year.”

Meanwhile, the analyst’s Asian contacts have also led him to believe that “Apple will be making changes to Apple TV” sometime in the second half of 2008 “which could include an LCD display.”

“Apple will refresh its entire Mac line-up throughout 2008, but information about the potential launch of a subnotebook was scarce, with one supplier saying that the product may be pushed out, citing possible design issues,” he added.

In general, Bailey said several of the companies he met with suggested that they were seeing higher than expected shipments of iPods this quarter, with one commenting that Apple adjusted orders upward in October during the peak holiday season manufacturing build.

“Both the iPod Touch and nano are seeing strength while iPod shuffle demand seems stable, which should cause blended average selling prices (ASPs) to come in above our $150 estimate,” he wrote.

This data point appears to corroborate recent comments from CNBC’s Jim Goldman, who last week cited his own sources in Asia as saying that the iPod Touch was selling “far better than expected,” compelling one of the Apple’s manufacturing partners to increase production to 5.1 million units for the current quarter.

For his part, Bailey added that his supply chain contacts are expecting another year of double-digit iPod growth in 2008. On the Mac side, he said, Apple’s notebook demand remains strong and should drive above-market growth for the seventh quarter in a row – a trend that suppliers expect will continue in the new year.

Goldman Sachs maintains a Buy rating on Apple shares with a 12-month price target of $205 per share.

Apple / AT&T Sued over Visual Voicemail

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Apple and AT&T on Monday were hit with a hefty patent infringement lawsuit from Klausner Technologies, which charges the pair with treading on patented technology by offering Visual Voicemail service to iPhone customers.

The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in the Eastern District of Texas, asserts that sales of that iPhone, Visual Voicemail and other visual voice messaging services implemented by AT&T infringe Klausner’s U.S. Patents 5,572,576 and 5,283,818.

Klausner is seeking damages and future royalties estimated at $360 million.

Owned by a group of private investors, the firm has successfully defended and then licensed the same patents to other industry heavyweights that provide visual voicemail services, including Time Warner’s AOL for its AOL Voicemail services and Vonage Holdings for its Vonage Voicemail Plus services.

In the latest suit, Klausner specifically alleges that the iPhone violates its intellectual property rights by allowing users to selectively retrieve voice messages via the iPhone’s inbox display.

“We have litigated this patent successfully on two prior occasions,” said Greg Dovel of Dovel & Luner, counsel for Klausner. “With the signing of each new licensee, we continue to receive further confirmation of the strength of our visual voicemail patents.”

Separately on Monday, Klausner also filed similar claims against Comcast Corporation, Cablevision Systems Corp. and eBay Inc.’s Skype with damages and future royalties estimated at $300 million.

In that case, Klausner’s alleges that Cablevision’s Optimum Voicemail, Comcast’s Digital Voice Voicemail and eBay’s Skype Voicemail each violate intellectual property rights by allowing users to selectively retrieve and listen to voice messages via message inbox displays.

Free WiFi in New York

Monday, November 19th, 2007

So, if anyone is heading off to the BIG APPLE! (Get it - okay, its Monday morning!) then you can now get free WiFi in parts of New York City.

CBS today said it has switched on the CBS Mobile Zone, a free Wi-Fi area in mid-town Manhattan that will be accessible by anyone. The large hotspot is intended to CBS’ main building in the borough and will ultimately range vertically from the south end of Central Park to west 42nd Street; some of Times Square as well as a significant area between 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue are also covered. This access will be subsidized by a unique approach to ads, CBS says. An initial connection to the network will open a page with ads as well as news and downloads. Many of the ads and content will be specifically targeted at the neighborhood rather than New York City and includes reviews of local restaurants and other shops.
This network is currently considered a test project developed in tandem with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority that should last for at least six months. Some areas are live effective immediately and will be joined by the rest of the network by the end of November. Local businesses are also being encouraged to add wireless routers to their buildings to help avoid dark spots inside the area, according to the broadcaster.

The Mobile Zone is not device- or software-specific and will allow cellphones, notebooks, and other hardware to connect as long as they include a web browser. VoIP calling and other comparatively high-demand Internet activities will also be acceptable, CBS notes. If successful, the trial may also expand to include other areas where CBS’ Outdoor division has a presence.

If anyone is heading to New York for any Christmas shopping and want to try the network with their iPhone, we welcome the feedback.

More iPhone Features to Come?

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Pocket Lint seems to have spoken to Apple about the features on the iPhone with some interesting responses:

Apple has confirmed that it has plenty more upgrades to come for the Apple iPhone.

“All the complaints and feature requests we’ve had can be fixed and added by software upgrades,” a spokesman for the company told Pocket-lint.

The news will come as a relief to new customers who bought the company’s mobile phone over the weekend and may have been disappointed by some of its limitations.

Apple representatives told Pocket-lint: “We didn’t want to include something for something’s sake.”

Since its launch in the US in June, Apple has been criticised for leaving out some key functionality, like the ability to record video via the included digital camera and greater Bluetooth support beyond voice functionality.

“For the average mobile phone most people only use around 10%, Apple didn’t want that to happen with the iPhone.”

However some commentators believe that not including all the software features from day one will allow the company to entice new customers over the next couple of months.

“They [Apple] aren’t stupid. They won’t want to give you everything at once. You wait, there will an exciting partnership with YouTube that adds video functionality
and then lets you upload to the site in no time,” an industry insider told Pocket-lint.

Others however believe the answer is more simple than that:.

“If the reason to upgrade the software each time is compelling enough, then you are less likely to hack the software, meaning Apple gets to earn the substantial revenue agreement it has with the official operator,” another source told us.

Guess we’ll see where this goes over the coming months…as always - comments welcomed

Apple Q4 Results

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

During today’s financial conference call, Apple revealed that they estimate that about 250,000 iPhones were purchased by individuals intending to unlock them. No details on how Apple came to this conclusion. Apple, of course, would know exactly how many iPhones had been activated through AT&T.

Apple shipped 2,164,000 Macintosh(R) computers, representing 34 percent growth over the year-ago quarter and exceeding the previous quarterly record for Mac shipments by 400,000. Apple sold 10,200,000 iPods during the quarter, representing 17 percent growth over the year-ago quarter. Quarterly iPhone sales were 1,119,000, bringing cumulative fiscal 2007 sales to 1,389,000.

AT&T Loosen iPhone Contracts

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

The Washington Post reports that AT&T and Verizon made some pre-emptive changes to their contract restrictions last week to try to appease U.S. lawmakers looking to reform the cellphone industry.

Specifically, AT&T said it would replace its $175 cancellation fee with a prorated system allowing customers to pay less towards the end of their contract. AT&T also said that customers would be able to change calling plans without automatically extending their two-year contract.

This should affect all U.S. iPhone owners under AT&T contract.

iPhone to Support Nike+ Products & Radion Remote?

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

MacRumors have posted an article about how during the jailbreak of the 1.1.1 update to the iPhone, there are several new referencers. These refer to com.apple.mobile.radio and com.apple.mobile.nike giving a strong indication that Apple could be planning to include the iPhone to work with the Nike+ products which only work with certain versions of the iPod Nano, and a remote radio function.
