100,000 Copies of SDK Downloaded in 4 Days

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Apple have just released this press statement:

iPhone SDK Downloads Top 100,000

CUPERTINO, California—March 12, 2008—Apple® today announced that more than 100,000 iPhone™ developers have downloaded the beta iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) in the first four days since its launch on March 6. The iPhone SDK provides developers with the same rich set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and tools that Apple uses to create its native applications for iPhone and iPod® touch.

“Developer reaction to the iPhone SDK has been incredible with more than 100,000 downloads in the first four days,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Also, over one million people have watched the launch video on Apple.com, further demonstrating the incredible interest developers have in creating applications for the iPhone.”

Apple also previewed the new App Store, a breakthrough way for developers to wirelessly deliver their applications to every iPhone and iPod touch user. Developers set the price for their applications—including free—and retain 70 percent of all sales revenues.

Leading developers such as AOL, Electronic Arts, Epocrates, Salesforce.com and Sega have already demonstrated amazing applications using the SDK, and developer response continues to be phenomenal with more developers embracing the platform.

“The iPhone SDK gives us the tools we need to create powerful iPhone applications and is an important part of our overall mobile strategy,” said Rick Jensen, senior vice president, Small Business Group at Intuit. “We’re excited that the iPhone expands the ways our customers can solve key financial tasks wherever they might be.”

“We’re very excited about Apple’s new SDK and reaching every iPhone user through the new App Store,” said Scott Rubin, vice president, Sales and Marketing, Namco Networks. “We can’t wait to show off great new versions of arcade classics like PAC-MAN and Galaga that use the revolutionary features of the iPhone and iPod touch.”

“Apple’s tools have provided our development team the flexibility to make the SuitePhone application richer and deeper,” said Luke Braud, vice president, Software Development, NetSuite. “NetSuite is excited at the opportunity to give every iPhone customer access to their critical business data anytime, anywhere.”

“Apple’s become an important mobile game platform with the iPhone SDK,” said Jason Kapalka, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer, PopCap. “The new SDK gives us the tools to innovate and reinvent games like Bejeweled, Zuma and Peggle. With the new App Store we can reach every iPhone and iPod touch user on the planet.”

“Seventy percent of the retail price is hands-down the best deal out there in mobile. It’s simple and motivating for developers,” said Wayne B. Yurtin, president and CEO, Rocket Mobile, Inc. “We can’t wait to get our first iPhone applications on the revolutionary App Store.”

“Six Apart pioneered the mobile blogging experience with an iPhone-optimised blog service,” said Chris Alden, CEO, Six Apart. “We’re taking it to the next level with our native iPhone application for TypePad that’s already in development.”

“The iPhone is the mobile platform game developers have been dreaming of,” said Scott Zerby, vice president, THQ Wireless. “We’re looking at how we can use the iPhone’s innovative user interface to create new game experiences for our big brand entertainment partners that consumers love.”

Pricing & Availability
The free beta iPhone SDK is available immediately worldwide and can be downloaded at developer.apple.com/iphone/program. The iPhone Developer Program will initially be available in the US and will expand to other countries in the coming months. A QuickTime® video of the iPhone roadmap event is available to view at apple.com/quicktime/qtv/iphoneroadmap.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.

Contacts Search Coming to iPhone?

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Something of note from the SDK video last week. It seems that someone has spotted on the contact page that there is a small Spotlight looking icon which might indicate that a search facility for contacts might be part of the upgrade.

But note that on the original presentation when the iphone was launched, there where features that were mentioned that did not appear, so do NOT take this as red that the feature will be on there - but it would be nice if it was…

More details on SDK…

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

According to AppleInsider, Apple’s COO Tim Cook, has given details on the upcoming SDK, although there are very little details in this…

Apple’s COO, Timothy Cook, delivered a question and answer session at the Goldman Sachs Investment Symposium yesterday, and touched on a number of interesting topics. Differing notes available at MacNN, Appleinsider and iPhoneAtlas.

Of interest, Cook answers why Apple hasn’t offered an unlocked version of the iPhone. He states that multi-carrier offerings were impractical at launch. For the U.S. market, this would require a CDMA and GSM version of the iPhone. In the end, they felt it was impractical to try to satisfy every carrier and every user. Still, he states that Apple is “not married to any business model” and instead, they’re “married to … shipping the best phones in the world.”

When asked about the possibility of Apple expanding into even more areas with new product lines, Cook feels anything is possible, but that each product choice is made carefully since “for everything we do, we know me make a choice not to do something else. We may or may not add some over time, we’ll see.”

Regarding iPod reaching a saturation point, Cook points out that 40% of iPods are still being sold to those who don’t already own an iPod and suggests that slower iPod sales are a reflection of the economy than necessarily sales saturation.

He again describes the iPod Touch as the “first mainstream WiFi portable platform” and also describes the iPhone as a “platform not a product”, and states that the upcoming SDK will “broaden the platform more, to the point where the only limit will be people’s imagination.” Cook stopped short when asked about when the first 3rd party apps would appear, not wanting to take away any element of surprise from next week’s event.

Finally on iPhone Unlocking, Cook acknowledges the problem but states he “look[s] at this ‘problem’ with a little bit of a smile. Having people stepping over each other for the phone isn’t a bad thing.” He goes on to state that the best way for Apple to fight back is to offer the iPhone in more countries.

Apple SDK Event

Apple have released details of the long waited SDK. They have sent invitations out to the media to attend an event on the Apple Campus on Thursday 6th March 2008, starting at 10am (6pm UK Time). It seems that they will release details of the SDK, stuff for Enterprise and a roadmap - maybe at this event, there might even be mention of the rumored 3G iPhone?

This from MacRumors:

Crave and Reuters reports that Apple has sent out invitations for an event on Thursday morning detailing the iPhone Software Developement Kit (SDK):”Please join us to learn about the iPhone software roadmap, including the iPhone SDK and some exciting new enterprise features,” Apple said in an invitation sent to reporters.

Steve Jobs had originally announced that the iPhone and iPod Touch Software Development Kit (SDK) would be released in February 2008. Last week rumors pointed to a brief delay in the launch of the SDK. The SDK will allow developers to release their own software applications for both the iPod Touch and iPhone.

Few details have been made available, but the SDK has been reportedly already been seeded to select developers in the months ahead of its release. The event will take places at 10am Pacific time at Apple’s Cupertino campus.

SDK Delayed by 1-3 Weeks?

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Reports are coming from BusinessWeek in the US that the SDK may be delayed by 1-3 weeks.

There’s a week to go before Apple’s commitment to release the iPhone Software Developers Kit in February runs out of room. I’m hearing from one source that its going to be late. I’m not yet hearing any reasons why, and it’s sounding like the official release date could slide by anywhere from one to three weeks.

Apple had no comment, and as yet there’s no word on any events related to an SDK release next week. However I’m also hearing that the situation is fluid, and a lot of last-minute decisions are close to being made about what precisely will or will not be disclosed next week, if anything. There are, apparently, a lot of moving parts to something this complex.

Remember if you will that BusinessWeek broke the story of Apple’s plans to release an iPod SDK in October, a day before CEO Steve Jobs announced the company’s intentions himself via a statement on the “Hot News” section of Apple’s Web site.

So will they make it to the finish line in time or will they have to fudge it a little? We’ll all be watching next week.

Apple Special Event

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Apple seems set to host a special event in New York in the coming weeks, or at the very least to stage an iTunes Live gig there, featuring Linkin’ Park.

The band reportedly let slip to fans of plans to perform at an Apple event in New York earlier this week, but warned these plans to be “secret”.

Whether it’s wishful thinking is unclear, but with Apple expected to introduce its iPhone Software Development Kit this month it’s not beyond the boundaries of possibility to speculate on a special event to mark the launch and introduce the first shipping applications from third party developers.

Speculation is gathering such force that even the New York Times is mulling the possibility.

A second report hints that developers are already applying the finishing touches to new software for the iPhone and iPod touch. PocketGamer reports Gameloft CEO Michel Guillemot illustrated his keynote speech on games and mobiles with a slide showing one of his titles running on an iPhone.

“What we do know is that Apple hasn’t yet announced its plans for official iPhone downloadable games. But judging by its work with iPod games already, Gameloft is likely to be one of the launch partners,” the report claims.

Finally, the BBC today promised iPlayer streaming television would be made available to iPhone and iPod touch owners, “within weeks”. Could this indicate the debut of Adobe Flash Player on the iPhone?

Firmware 1.1.3 - The Aftermath

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Well its the morning after the first software update for us Brits here in the UK and upon reflection, I still have mixed emotions about the 1.1.3 update. As we know, all the features from the leaked video a few weeks back where introduced in this update including the ability to create your own icons for web bookmarks, Locate Me on Maps and multiple text messages.

Web Icons:
Yeah, nice feature and does make it quicker to get to some of the sites that I look at every day. I know this feature is only getting us ready for the hugh amount of 3rd Party Apps that will be coming our way after the SDK is launched in late Feb.

Locate Me:
This is interesting from listening to Steve’s Keynote. It seems that Apple have not gone with just the Google Cell Triangulation but with Skyhook - a company that has been driving round the US, mapping all WiFi networks etc. Skyhook have started in the Europe and are moving into Asia in 2008.

I tried this feature this morning traveling in and out of Glasgow. There are numerous WiFi connections (on the cloud and others) throughout Glasgow so I thought it would interesting to see how this works. The results where pretty good when your near a WiFi spot that must be on the Skyhook database. The accuracy is down to maybe 100 yards in places. It gets interesting when your driving on the motorway. Then the area widens and must be taking the information from the cell towers - unless you happen to go past a service station with WiFi. This happened this morning as I was passing Bothwell Services on the M74 just outside Glasgow, which I know to have BT Broadband WiFi! - when passing there, I hit the locate me button and it zoomed in pretty close to my actual position. So my view on this is, yeah it a cool little feature, however if you where expecting a GPS replacement, its far from it.

Multiple Text Messages:
Yeah - about time too. Would have been nice to have it for New Years Eve!!! Still, there is always next year!

iPod Chapter Markers:
Seem like a nice idea. I have a film on my iPhone and it automatically put in the chapter markers - nice!

Firmware 1.1.4 ???
So what do this leave to come in future updates? Well I suppose it depends what you individually want on your iPhone. Like me, I am sure you where disappointed at a Copy & Paste feature not being on this update but I am sure that this will come, eventually. MMS would also be nice but I am quite happy with sending free photo’s via email - so saving some money there!

As for a wish-list of 3rd Party Apps to come out of the SDK - I am pretty confident that the SDK has been released to a few developers and that when it does launch in late Feb, we will have some apps available. Whether these will be charged for through iTunes - well that quite possible, we will have to wait and see.

What would I like (to all those iPhone developers out there…) as a native app?

iChat: I know there’s JiveTalk - but it would be nice to have a native app
RSS reader
iWorks version so I can edit Pages / Keynote / Numbers documents
GPS: even if I have to plug in a GPS receiver in the 30 pin connector!

to name a few!

Hope you enjoy your new features on your iPhones, and we welcome your comments - what do you think of the 1.1.3 update?

- Devices in iTunes, battery icon shows up to indicate it charges.

7.02am - The queue outside the Glasgow store started at 7.02am with yours truly starting the queue. Weather in Glasgow - Cold but dry.
8am - The queue has now expanded to 2 people
9.25am - The barriers are out in Buchanan Street and the crowd is now sitting at 4 people. The iPhone arrived yesterday at the store and the staff are in a jovial mood today.

Apple Store GlasgowApple Store Glasgow
9.46am - Press are already starting to take photos!

11.09am - Well Buchanan Street is getting busy. The store is open. We are living off StarBucks - you need them in the cold weather of Scotland. The Apple Store video crew have arrived! The press are swarming about at a distance. Just under 7 hours to go!

Sorry about the formatting today - Wordpress is playing up! Typical!

iPhone outside iPhone Glasgow

11.32am - The rain has started very lightly here in Glasgow. Isn’t it funny how Apple have started selling their iPhone to the Scots before anyone else! (See the picture above! - and No its not Davids US version which we reviewed earlier :-) ) Only joking Phil - no need to send the Apple Helicopter to Glasgow!!!!)

11.40am - Our queue is now at 8 people. We have been bullpened into the barrier system that was set up this morning.

12.20pm -Less than 6 hours to go and the weather here is hit and miss. More people are starting to queue - we are now in double figures. Thanks to Johnny Evans at MacWorld.co.uk for the plug.

Glasgow Wins Commonweath Games 2014

1.00pm - Congratulations to Glasgow for winning the 2014 Commonwealth Games. That’s a double celebration in Glasgow today. iPhones & 2014 Games!!!! Just finished our pizza after being interviewed by the Apple Video Crew. Plugs for the site!!!! Will that mean I get an email from Apple Legal to cease with the site cause I am using the iPhone Name?

The Apple store have come out with Apple iUmbrellas to keep us dry - Thanks guys!!!

Here in Glasgow, we are up to 16 people - its getting longer, sorry 17 people now (another one joined, 18 - and another….this could go on!)

Doors Closed at Glasgow

2.10pm - The doors are now shut at Glasgow’s Apple Store. The Times are taking photographs here. The line is growing and there must be about 35-40 people in the line here and it is growing every few minutes. Notice the yellow post-it note on the door! It says “We are currently updating your Apple Store!”

New Posters on Window - iPhone

3.30pm - They have replaced the window posters on the Apple window with “iPhone Premiere, Tonight at 6.02pm” The best thing is that O2 staff have been trying to poach us down to the local O2 store for free coffee and muffins - when where right at the front of the Apple Store Queue. Less than 2.5 hours to go. Free coffee from Starbucks whilst we stood in a brief rain shower. Thanks to all those that have emailed with support for us - not long to go my friends!

4.10pm - I was in the middle of doing my 4pm blog when the Scottish Herald wanted to take photos! Oh whats its like to live the celebrity lifestyle of being the first in line for an iPhone!!!! Its amazing how when anyone asks who was first - the rest of the guys here point to me within 0.000001 of a second!!!! But hey, there a good bunch of guys (I guess! :-) ).

Apple staff have just given us bottles of O2 water!!! Get the plug? And the best question so far now is why 6.02pm? Just under 2 hours to go…..

4.55pm - It’s Friday, its 5 to 5, its iPhone UK Launch Day!!!! (For those old enough to remember that reference! :-) ) Well its little over an hour to go. Its getting dark here in Glasgow. The guys from the Apple Store came out and told us what will happen when the doors open. They have got a route round the store for us to walk, passing and picking our accessories before we get to the till point to buy our iPhones. The video guys turn up at lunchtime today, so we will be having a YouTube video on Monday. We will give you the address when we get it. We will also post all our photos over the course of the weekend. There is a space near the front of the queue reserved, for what we think is the press pen. We will be making 1 more post at around 5.30pm before we get ready. Then the next one will be later tonight after we all have our iPhones.

5.25pm - Okay so here is my final post without an iPhone. Just want to say HI to the guy in the Apple Store Glasgow who are sitting in the lounge watching this blog - whilst we are up here and its just starting to rain. Give us a big cheer! - Thanks for the umbrellas - roll on 6.02pm

Until later - Happy iPhone UK Launch Day!!!!

8.40pm - Well I am finally home. We got a great receiption from the ENTIRE Apple Store staff - so first off - thanks to all at the Apple Store for making the 6.02pm welcome into the store something really special. We clapped them back all the way round the store. Its kinda hard to take it all in as we had the press taking photos all the way round, including when I purchased the first iPhone at the Apple Store in Scotland. That took 2 minutes and then spent the next 25 minutes getting my photograph taken. So check out tomorrow - The Times, The Herald, Daily Record, etc.

Thanks also to all the guys who kept me company at the front of the queue, and to the rest of you in the queue, Ihoped you enjoyed your day. Special mention to David & Jon for their support and I think they where glad they weren’t first as the amount of interviews and photographs I had to give and stand for was massive. Although to note, David’s US iPhone must be the most photographed iPhone in Scotland!

So BIG shout out to all those that attended today in Glasgow and a BIG SHOUT OUT to all you out there who left comments and sent emails of support to us throughout the day. We had a laugh at the queue information from around the country!

So I finally got home and plugged in my iPhone, connected with O2 (who I have been with since..forever!) activation took only 4 minutes and made my first call from my iPhone. Just syncing my music, TV and movies to the iPhone and am as happy as a kid on Christmas Day.

Sorry to read the comments from some of you on your experience with your iPhones. It would have been a story to end with if the first iPhone sold at the only Scottish Apple Store turned out to not sync or activate.

It’s been a journey over the recent months and a BIG THANK YOU for everyone out there that has supported the site with your comments, questions and answers. To quote part of a saying from one of my favorite films (The Empire Strikes Back), “This has been a day long remembered…” we all have our iPhones, some happy, some not, but thank you all for the journey.

Enjoy your new toys and enjoy what’s left of iPhone UK Launch Day!

Steve
Online Editor

PS - We will be posting some of our pictures of the coming days and watch out for our YouTube video of the day in the line at the Glasgow Apple Store waiting for the iPhone!

iPhone Ads

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

Slashgear has posted some video from todays event featuring some of the ads that will be playing in the media over the coming weeks. It features some of the ads we have seen before from the US but instead of browsing the NY Times, they are browsing the Guardian. It also features a british accent! (bit dodgy!).

Steve in Town?

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Pocketlint is reporting that the man himself, Steve Jobs is in town, leading ot the weight that this will be a huge launch for Apple. If Steve has made the trip to the UK for this launch, then we are truely blessed. Lets hope that if these rumors are right and he is in town, that the keynote is being recorded and up on the Apple website by late afternoon.

iPhone on Vodafone - Germany?

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Okay, so at the end of a long (ed. very long) Monday, the latest rumor flying around concerns iPhone in Germany. As you know, the rumors have been stating that T-Mobile will be awarded the contract for Germany, but it seems that those folks over at BMW are showing off an iPhone at the Frankfurt Motor Show with the Vodafone network showing.

Now these images could of course be altered and we know how easy it is to change the carrier logo, but it does go to show that with just over 12 hours, anything could be possible.

Check out the pictures here.

iPhone Articles in the Press

Monday, September 17th, 2007

I am sure with less than 24 hours till the Spcial Announcement, the press are cooking up all the hype. Latest reports are to confirm that O2 will be named the network carrier, with iPhones selling in O2 network shops and Carphone Warehouse being an independent seller on behalf of O2.

Telegraph
Guardian
Electronista
Updated: Channel 4 News

We also found a comment on a MacRumors thread that O2 stores are installing wireless points in all their stores - but this is unconfirmed. Let the rumor mill continue for the rest of the day!!!
